Golf Lessons for Adults: Is It Too Late to Start?

By Tyler Olson, PGA Associate ·

No, it is not too late to start golf as an adult. Plenty of people pick up the game in their 30s, 40s, 50s and later, and golf is built to be played at any age. You will not look like a college player in a month, but with a few short lessons and steady practice you can learn to hit the ball and enjoy a round.

Is it too late to learn golf as an adult?

It is not. Golf is one of the few sports where a 25-year-old and a 65-year-old can play the same course together, because of tees, handicaps and the fact that nobody is tackling you. Starting later means you will probably be more patient and more willing to practice on purpose, which helps a lot.

What changes with age is mostly flexibility and how long you can practice before you are sore. That is something to plan around, not a reason to skip the game.

What does the first month of golf lessons look like?

In week one, I keep it simple: how to hold the club, how to stand, and how to make a basic swing that gets the ball in the air. Most adult beginners want to hit driver right away, and we usually start with a shorter club because it is easier to learn on.

In weeks two through four we build on that. We usually add some chipping and putting, since that is where a lot of the game happens, and we start to work on a repeatable routine. By the end of the month, the goal is not a perfect swing. It is making contact more often, knowing what to practice, and feeling comfortable on a course.

What do adult beginners struggle with most?

A lot of new golfers fight the same few things: topping the ball, slicing it, and rushing the swing because they feel watched. All of these are normal and fixable, and none of them mean you are too old or not athletic enough.

The other big one is expectation. People compare themselves to what they see on TV. Golf is hard for everyone at the start, and the first few weeks are mostly about getting the basics to feel less strange.

How often should an adult beginner practice?

Two or three short sessions a week beats one long one. Thirty to forty-five minutes is plenty early on. Your hands and body need time to learn the motion, and tired practice often builds bad habits.

If you can only get out once a week, that is fine too. Even some slow swings at home, without a ball, help the basics stick.

Do I need my own clubs before I start lessons?

No. You can begin with a few clubs and figure out the rest later. Buying a full set before you know what you like is a common mistake, and it is usually better to wait until you have swung a few different clubs and know what feels comfortable.

How do I get started with lessons in Utah County?

I teach 30-minute one-on-one lessons for adult beginners in Orem and Vineyard. I am a PGA Associate, and I work with people who have never touched a club as well as people who played years ago and want to get back into it.

Every lesson ends with a written practice plan you keep, so you know what to work on between sessions instead of guessing. You can look at the lesson options on this site and pick a time that fits.

Questions

Common Questions

Am I too old to start golf?

No. People start golf in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond and enjoy it for years. You may need to pay attention to flexibility and pace your practice, but age alone is not a barrier.

How long does it take an adult to learn golf?

It depends on how often you practice and how much time you have, so I cannot give a firm number. Many adults can make solid contact and feel comfortable on a course after a few weeks of regular lessons and practice. Getting good takes longer, and that is true for everyone.

Should adult beginners take lessons or teach themselves?

Lessons help because early habits are hard to undo, and it is easy to practice the wrong thing for months. A few lessons at the start give you a solid base and a clear plan. You can still practice on your own in between.

Do I need to be in shape to take golf lessons?

No. Golf lessons are not a workout, and we go at your pace. If you have an injury or a physical limitation, tell me up front and we will work around it.

What should I bring to my first adult golf lesson?

Wear comfortable clothes and athletic or flat-soled shoes. If you have clubs, bring them, and if you do not, that is fine. Just bring a willingness to try things and make some mistakes.
