What Happens in Your First Golf Lesson

Thirty minutes, start to finish — so you know exactly what you are walking into.

Your first lesson is a 30-minute Swing Evaluation, $40. You hit balls, Tyler watches and asks questions, and together you find the two or three things actually costing you strokes. You leave with a written Game Plan you keep. Bring nothing but yourself — no clubs, no golf shoes, no experience required. If you do not own clubs, say so when you book and Tyler brings some.

Minute by Minute

The Thirty Minutes

First, a conversation

Before you swing at anything, Tyler asks what you are actually trying to do. Break 90. Stop slicing. Keep up with your spouse. Not embarrass yourself at the company scramble. These are different problems and they get different lessons, and an instructor who skips this step is teaching a generic swing to a specific person.

Then you hit

Normally. Not the swing you think you are supposed to make with someone watching — the one you actually make. Tyler is looking at what your ball does and why, and the more honest the swing, the more useful the answer.

Then the two or three things

Not fifteen. Most golfers have a long list of flaws and a short list of flaws that matter, and the entire skill of coaching is telling them apart. You will hear about the ones costing you strokes and you will not be handed a lecture about the rest.

Then you leave with it written down

This is the part most lessons skip. You get a written Game Plan — what to work on, how to practise it, and what it should feel like when it is right. You keep it. A lesson you cannot remember on Thursday was not worth paying for on Tuesday.

What to Bring

That is the whole list. You do not need a glove, a rangefinder, or any prior experience.

Where to Meet

Lessons are held at a range in Vineyard, serving golfers across Utah County. Tyler confirms exactly where to meet when you book, so you always know before you drive. If you are coming from Provo, Lehi or American Fork, it is a short trip — see the city pages for drive times.

Bringing clubs you want looked at

If your clubs might be part of the problem, bring them. Club fitting is $40 and happens inside a lesson — Tyler watches you hit before touching anything, keeps what needs work, and returns it at your next session. Regripping is $4 per club for labor, plus the grip.

Questions

Common Questions

What should I bring to my first golf lesson?

Comfortable clothes you can turn in, athletic shoes, and your clubs if you own them. That is all. There is no dress code, golf shoes are not required, and if you do not own clubs, say so when you book and Tyler will bring some that fit you.

What happens in a first golf lesson?

At Olson Golf Academy: a short conversation about what you actually want from your golf, then you hit balls normally while Tyler watches, then you identify the two or three things costing you the most strokes. You leave with a written Game Plan you keep. It runs 30 minutes and costs $40.

Do I need my own golf clubs?

No. Mention it when you book and clubs will be provided. Buying a set before anyone has watched you swing is a common and expensive mistake — a fitting after a few lessons will tell you far more about what you should buy.

How long is a first golf lesson?

Thirty minutes. That is long enough to diagnose and to start on the biggest fix, and short enough that a brand-new golfer is not exhausted or overloaded. A 60-minute lesson is available for $90 once you know what you are working on.

Is the first lesson cheaper?

Yes. The Swing Evaluation is $40 rather than the regular $50, because it is meant to be a starting point rather than a commitment. You are not required to buy anything after it.
